NEW YORK – The National Center for Access to Justice is pleased to announce its new Chairman – Stephen Zack, Administrative Partner for Boies, Schiller & Flexner’s Miami office.  Zack is the immediate past President of the American Bar Association (ABA).

As ABA President, Zack created the ABA’s Task Force on the Preservation of the Justice System (led by former Bush administration Solicitor General, Ted Olson, and by Zack’s law firm colleague, David Boies) to raise awareness of the threat posed by the nation’s failure to adequately finance the state courts. Zack also created the ABA’s Commission to Promote Hispanic Rights and Responsibilities to tackle the most pressing legal issues facing Hispanics throughout the United States. Zack’s established law practice at Boies, Schiller & Flexner focuses on complex commercial litigation. He is a specialist in civil trial law, eminent domain, and corporate and international law. In 2000, he represented former Vice President Al Gore in the trial of Bush v. Gore.

As the Center’s new Chairman, Zack said, “Having fled Cuba in 1962, I have a deep commitment to the mission and work of the National Center for Access to Justice, including its project to build a Justice Index to illuminate the degree to which our American legal system is delivering on the promise of equal justice.”

David Udell, the Center’s Executive Director, noted, “The Center’s mission is particularly important and challenging today, with households and courts alike suffering severe budget constraints. Steve Zack brings the extraordinary combination of knowledge, passion and unparalleled experience needed to meet the challenge head on.”

The Center is deeply grateful to the Hon. George Bundy Smith, a former Judge on the New York Court of Appeals (the state’s highest court), for his critically important role as the Center’s founding board chair, and for continuing to serve as a member of the Center’s board of directors.
