Economic & Other Benefits of Civil Legal Aid Are Summarized in New Fact Sheet

Civil legal aid provides substantial economic benefits to communities and families, according to social science findings collected by the National Center for Access to Justice in a newly released fact sheetCommunities considering the value of civil legal aid programs are invited to download the document, which shows that: 

  • Civil legal aid “significantly” reduces incidents of domestic violence by helping victims obtain child custody arrangements and child support payments that enable them to leave abusive relationships. 
  • Civil legal aid enables children to exit foster care more quickly when their parents are represented in child welfare proceedings. 
  • Civil legal aid increases chances for tenants to retain possession of their homes when they are represented in eviction proceedings.
  • Civil legal aid enables asthmatic adults to stop taking steroids for at least six months when represented in proceedings compelling their landlords to remove contaminants from their homes.
